Safety Around People While Lawn Mowing

By Juan Hernandez Leave a Comment

As the owner and operator of my lawn mowing business there is one thing I want to talk about and that is SAFETY around people.  While they may be lots of times when you will not come across someone while mowing a lawn there is the occasion when it does occur.  Let me talk about my experience and what should be done when it does happen.

When operating lawn mowing equipment, it’s important to be very careful and be mindful of people that may come too close.  Just the other day I was edging a customers sidewalk with a weedeater when a woman, walking towards me pushing a stroller, only slowed down to shield her baby with one hand while talking on the phone.  Had I’ve known she was coming towards me I would have stopped, let her pass, then resumed my work.  She was probably 5 feet away before I noticed her.  Thank God nothing happened.  This is just one example of what can happen when your working out in the field.

It’s important to always be on the lookout for people that are heading your way.  It’s a constant thing to be always looking up and aware of your surroundings.  Only goes to show you that you have to be on the lookout for people that come too close to your area of work.  Whether it be a person out for a walk, a customer wanting to talk to you, someone working nearby, or it could even be a co-worker.  Always practice safety when lawn mowing.

I have had children come and see what I was doing at their home.  No matter how far they are it may seem safe but it never is.  It’s important to stop what your doing and tell the child/children or guardian that its not safe for them to be anywhere near you.  They need to be inside their home.  Tell them in a nice way.  Only when they are inside is it safe to proceed.  Never take a chance with other peoples well being.

When a person does come into your work area always stop the equipment.  This way you won’t accidentally hurt them.  Only when they have left your work zone can you resume working.  Practice these safety tips and you will avoid problems.
